Hazel Price

BA (York St John) MA (Huddersfield)

Research Information and Communications Officer

Biography

I joined the university as a member of staff in 2014. I work as a Research Assistant across the research centres and consultancies in the subject area with a focus on the application and impact of linguistic research.

I am also a PhD student at the university using methods from corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis to explore the discursive construction of mental health in UK newspapers. My PhD work aims to analyse how the press represent issues concerning mental health and how it can be said to affect society’s view of mental health.

I am an Editorial Assistant for the popular language magazine, Babel (www.babelzine.com), where I write the regular feature ‘Language in the News’, and Assistant Editor of Lingo (www.lingozine.com) which aims to bring linguistics to a young audience. I also organise the weekly Huddersfield Linguistics Research Seminar Series.

Research and Scholarship

In addition to my PhD research, I am conducting research on interpersonal pragmatics in a courtroom setting and I am currently editing a book with Dan McIntyre for Routledge entitled ‘Applying Linguistics: Language and the Impact Agenda’.

I also conduct research for Language Unlocked, a consultancy based in Linguistics and Modern Languages that specialises in the analysis of large quantities of language data for public, private and third-sector organisations. Our clients have included the UK Green Party and the BBC.
