A-level teachers symposium 2019
The department of Linguistics and Modern Languages at the University of Huddersfield will host the 8th Annual Symposium for A-Level Teachers of English Language on Monday 24 June 2019. The day will run from 10am – 4.45pm, with a free lunch and the breaks provided!
The day will take place in the Oastler building on the Queensgate campus in Huddersfield. The day will include plenary talks by leading language specialists and practical workshops outlining new techniques of linguistic analysis.
This year’s talks come from the Linguistics department here at Huddersfield and elsewhere. They will discuss cutting edge linguistic research and how this can be used to help A-Level students in their studies. They will explore:
· The language of RuPaul (Dr Tom Devlin, University of Huddersfield)
· Hansard – making parliament accessible (Prof Lesley Jeffries, UoH)
· Language, computers and statistics (Babette Verhoeven, Aquinas College and UoH)
· Using software to help students learn grammar (Mark Boardman, UoH)
· Engaging critically with how language issues are represented in the media (Dan Clayton, University College London)

Linguistics and modern languages hosted IAFPA 2018 conference
We hosted the 27th annual meeting of The International Association for Forensic Phonetics and Acoustics. The conference took place 29th July - 1st August 2018. Well done to the local organising committee!

THE ANNUAL BABEL LECTURE: pETER FRENCH, friday 12th May 2017
This year's Annual Babel Lecture was given by Professor Peter French (J.P. French Associates) on Friday 12th May 2017. Peter's talk was titled 'Their own tongues speak against them: Phonetics in the criminal justice system'. The lecture described the roles played by phoneticians as forensic scientists in criminal investigations and as expert witnesses in criminal trials. A fantastic evening was had by all. LINGUISTICS AND MODERN LANGUAGES HOSTS THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LITERARY SEMANTICS CONFERENCE

UK Linguistics olympiad markathon
Linguistics and Modern Languages holds a yearly 'markathon' for the United Kingdom Linguistics Olympiad competition. This year's markathon took place on 21st February 2017. The afternoon consisted of marking UKLO scripts with some added food and fun!
Linguistics and Modern Languages Postgraduate Conference 2016
This year’s Linguistics and Modern Languages Postgraduate Conference was held on Thursday 30 June. The conference organisers this year are Emma Andrews and Mahmood Ibrahim.
A LEVEL TEACHER DAY - 28 JUNE 2016
The University of Huddersfield invites you to join us at our 6th Annual Symposium for teachers of English Language at A Level.
The day will include practical workshops and talks by specialists in English Language and Linguistics. This free one-day event aims to:
foster closer connections between A Level and University-level English Language and linguistics;
introduce teachers to new theories and methodologies for studying English Language;
open up discussion as to how current developments in language and linguistics might be implemented in the A Level English classroom.

Linguistics Olympiad National Finals
Between 18 and 20 March, we hosted the Round 2 finals of the UK Linguistics Olympiad (UKLO). UKLO organises a national competition for school students in which competitors have to solve linguistics puzzles. The four highest scoring competitors from Round 2 then represent the UK at the International Linguistics Olympiad, held this year in Mysore, India, between 25 and 29 July.
