Symposium for A-Level English Language Teachers - 28th june 2017

We will be hosting the free annual Symposium for A-Level English Language Teachers on Thursday 28th June 2018. The event will take place in the new Oastler building on the main Queensgate campus in Huddersfield. To see the programme and to register, visit the event page.

Linguistics and modern languages to host IAFPA 2018 conference

We will be hosting the 27th annual meeting of The International Association for Forensic Phonetics and Acoustics. The conference will take place 29th July - 1st August 2018. Dr Erica Gold successfully bid for the conference at the organisation's most recent meeting in Split, Croatia.

Symposium for A-Level English Language Teachers - 26th june 2017

The department of Linguistics and Modern Languages at the University of Huddersfield hosted the free annual Symposium for A-Level English Language Teachers on Monday 26th June 2017 in the new Oastler building on the main Queensgate campus in Huddersfield. THE ANNUAL BABEL LECTURE: pETER FRENCH, friday 12th May 2017

This year's Annual Babel Lecture was given by Professor Peter French (J.P. French Associates) on Friday 12th May 2017. Peter's talk was titled 'Their own tongues speak against them: Phonetics in the criminal justice system'. The lecture described the roles played by phoneticians as forensic scientists in criminal investigations and as expert witnesses in criminal trials. A fantastic evening was had by all.  A write up of the event is available here.

LINGUISTICS AND MODERN LANGUAGES HOSTS THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LITERARY SEMANTICS CONFERENCE

We hosted the International Association of Literary Semantics (IALS) 2017, 10-12th April 2017. The conference theme was'Creation and Innovation'. Click here for the conference website and here to see the call for papers.

UK Linguistics olympiad markathon

Linguistics and Modern Languages holds a yearly 'markathon' for the United Kingdom Linguistics Olympiad competition.  This year's markathon took place on 21st February 2017. The afternoon consisted of marking UKLO scripts with some added food and fun!

Linguistics and Modern Languages Postgraduate Conference 2016

This year’s Linguistics and Modern Languages Postgraduate Conference was held on Thursday 30 June. The conference organisers this year are Emma Andrews and Mahmood Ibrahim.

A LEVEL TEACHER DAY - 28 JUNE 2016

The University of Huddersfield invites you to join us at our 6th Annual Symposium for teachers of English Language at A Level.

The day will include practical workshops and talks by specialists in English Language and Linguistics. This free one-day event aims to:

  • foster closer connections between A Level and University-level English Language and linguistics;
  • introduce teachers to new theories and methodologies for studying English Language;
  • open up discussion as to how current developments in language and linguistics might be implemented in the A Level English classroom.

Linguistics Olympiad National Finals

Between 18 and 20 March, we hosted the Round 2 finals of the UK Linguistics Olympiad (UKLO). UKLO organises a national competition for school students in which competitors have to solve linguistics puzzles. The four highest scoring competitors from Round 2 then represent the UK at the International Linguistics Olympiad, held this year in Mysore, India, between 25 and 29 July.
